An AI sales channel is an AI assistant that shows your products to shoppers and sends them to buy, the way a marketplace or Google Shopping does. For Shopify stores in October 2026, ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Meta and the Shop app all read your products from the Shopify Catalog, and most are switched on by default. Turning them into real sales comes down to three things: being eligible, being the product the assistant picks, and measuring what each channel brings.
This guide compares the channels side by side and shows how to run them like any other sales channel.
What is an AI sales channel?
An AI sales channel is any AI assistant that can put your product in front of a shopper with a way to buy it. Unlike a search engine result, the assistant chooses a handful of products and explains why, so being picked matters more than ranking on a page of ten.
An LLM sales channel is the same idea named after the technology: the large language model behind ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot becomes the storefront the shopper talks to.
Is ChatGPT a sales channel or just a traffic source?
On Shopify, ChatGPT is both: a discovery channel that sends shoppers to your own checkout. Since March 2026 ChatGPT does not complete purchases itself; OpenAI says shoppers “discover and evaluate products in ChatGPT, but purchases are completed on merchant-owned websites or apps” (OpenAI). Shopify still treats ChatGPT as an agentic storefront and credits the resulting orders to ChatGPT.
Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta go further: they can complete the checkout inside the assistant, powered by Shopify.
Which AI sales channels can a Shopify store sell on?
As of October 2026, these are the AI channels Shopify lists under Agentic Storefronts (Shopify Help Center). Every cell below comes from Shopify’s help pages for that channel.
| Channel | How products get in | Where the shopper pays | Extra fees | Who can buy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Shopify Catalog, automatic | Your own Shopify checkout, in ChatGPT’s in-app browser or a new tab | None (standard payment processing only) | Stores that sell to US customers, wherever the store is based |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Google & YouTube channel or Google Merchant Center | Direct checkout inside Google, powered by Shopify (rolling out) | None for direct checkout | US-based stores selling to US customers |
| Microsoft Copilot | Shopify Catalog, automatic | Direct checkout inside Copilot (Copilot Checkout) | None for direct checkout | Stores that sell to US customers |
| Meta (for example Muse) | Shopify Catalog | Direct checkout, or your checkout in Meta’s in-app browser | None beyond processing | US, Canada and Mexico customers |
| Shop | Shopify Catalog (cannot be switched off from the Agentic page) | Shop app checkout | Not stated | Shop users |
Sources: Shopify Help Center pages for ChatGPT, Google, Copilot and Meta. Shopify’s own summary: “purchasing across all channels is currently available to US buyers only” (Shopify), with Meta the exception for Canada and Mexico.
How do your products get into ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot?
Through the Shopify Catalog. Agentic Storefronts is active by default for eligible stores; under the default setting “Allow Shopify to manage for me”, all channels and direct checkout are switched on and new AI channels are added automatically (Shopify Help Center). You manage it in Sales channels > Agentic.
To be in the catalog, a store must be on the Starter plan or higher, not password protected and not B2B-only. Each product needs a title, an image, a price above zero, a product URL, and a category: uncategorized products are excluded (Shopify Catalog requirements). The catalog keeps price and inventory in sync on its own.
Does selling through AI channels cost extra?
No. Shopify says there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT or for direct checkout in Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, or Meta, beyond standard payment processing. Microsoft says it does not take a commission or affiliate fee today (Microsoft Advertising), and OpenAI lists “no fees for purchases made on your site or app”.
Reports from early 2026 about a ChatGPT checkout fee relate to the old Instant Checkout model, which OpenAI has moved away from.
How does an AI sales channel compare to Google Shopping and marketplaces?
| AI sales channel | Google Shopping ads | Marketplace (for example Amazon) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How you get placed | Organic: the assistant picks products it judges relevant | Paid bids plus feed quality | Marketplace search ranking, often paid |
| Who owns the customer | You (orders land in your Shopify admin) | You | Largely the marketplace |
| Fees | None beyond payment processing (as of October 2026) | Cost per click | Referral and fulfillment fees |
| What wins | Complete product data, reviews, policies, accurate stock and price | Bids, feed quality, landing page | Price, reviews, fulfillment speed |
| Can you pay to rank? | Not for organic answers; ChatGPT says product results are not ads | Yes | Yes |
ChatGPT product results “are not ads, nor influenced by any OpenAI partnerships”, and the ads OpenAI started testing in the US on February 9, 2026 are shown separately (OpenAI Help).
How well does AI channel traffic convert?
In 2026, better than most other traffic, though volumes are still small. Adobe found that AI-referred visits to US retail sites converted 42% better than non-AI traffic in March 2026 and 60% better in July 2026, a year after AI traffic converted worse (TechCrunch, Digital Commerce 360). On Shopify, new-buyer orders from AI channels were arriving at “nearly twice the rate of other channels” in Q2 2026, according to Shopify’s president (PYMNTS).

How do you see the sales each AI channel brings?
Read them where Shopify records them, not only in Google Analytics.
- Shopify admin, Sales channels > Agentic: sales, orders, online store sessions and conversion per channel.
- ShopifyQL:
agentic_sales_channel(the assistant that completed the sale: Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Shop) andagentic_referring_channel(the assistant that referred the visit, ChatGPT included). - Octolift’s Agentic sales page: the same Shopify figures over 7, 30 or 90 days, by assistant, by product and with the orders behind each one.
Why not GA4 alone: in checkouts completed inside Google, Copilot or Meta, Google Analytics and custom pixels do not fire; only server-to-server events do (Shopify Help Center). And assistants often open your store without a referrer, so some AI visits land as Direct.
How do you rank higher in an AI sales channel?
You cannot buy organic placement, so you earn it with data the assistant can trust. OpenAI says ChatGPT ranks merchants for the same product on “availability, price, quality, and whether they are the maker or primary seller”, and considers reviews and structured product data (OpenAI Help). Shopify scores description completeness, image coverage, verified reviews, variant completeness with stock, and policy completeness.
In practice:
- Fill every category field and use specific variant names (Navy, 42), not Option 1.
- Write descriptions with concrete facts, never invented ones (a checklist).
- Keep price and stock accurate; a wrong price in an answer costs trust (why it happens).
- Publish refund, shipping, privacy and terms pages.
- Test real shopper questions per country and watch who wins. Octolift’s AI rankings does this across ChatGPT, Gemini and the Shopify catalog.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay to rank in an AI sales channel?
Not in organic answers. ChatGPT says its product results are not ads. Paid options exist separately: OpenAI is testing ads in the US, and Shopify’s Shop Campaigns now include ChatGPT.
Can I turn off a single AI channel?
Yes. In Sales channels > Agentic, turn off “Allow Shopify to manage for me”, then switch Shopify Catalog access or direct checkout off per channel. Turning catalog access off can take up to 7 days to apply, so avoid changes right before a sale.
Can stores outside the US sell through AI channels?
Partly. A store based anywhere can sell in ChatGPT and Copilot if it sells to US customers. Google AI Mode and Gemini need a US-based store. Meta checkout covers US, Canadian and Mexican buyers.
What does LLM sales channel mean?
It is another name for an AI sales channel: a large language model, such as the one behind ChatGPT, acting as the place where shoppers find and choose products.
Summary
ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Meta and Shop are already sales channels for eligible Shopify stores, with no extra fees and most of them on by default. Treat them like any channel: check you are eligible, give assistants complete and accurate product data, and measure sales per assistant in Shopify.
