Improve with AI writes a better description, title ideas, a category and values for empty category fields, all from the facts already in your listing. Each suggestion sits next to your current text, and nothing is written to your store until you press Save.
What do the suggestions cover?
Press Improve with AI on a product’s analysis page. The button is only enabled while at least one of these can still earn points:
- Description. One rewritten description, in the language of your current text.
- Title. One alternative (occasionally more), under 70 characters and different from the current title.
- Category fields. Values for the category’s attributes that are still empty, chosen only from the values Shopify’s taxonomy allows, and only where your text supports the choice. When a filled value contradicts your listing, a replacement is suggested too.
- Category. When the product has no category, a category from Shopify’s taxonomy that fits the text, or none if nothing truly fits. When the current category looks wrong, the best replacement Octolift found.
The page also lists what AI cannot write for you: your images, your store policies (with a link to Shopify’s policy settings), and the remaining gaps from the score breakdown.
What rules do the suggestions follow?
- No invented facts. A suggestion keeps every factual claim in your listing and adds no materials, measurements, certifications or other facts that are not already in your own text.
- Same language. Suggestions are written in the language of your existing listing.
- Checked before you see them. Each draft is scored by the same rater that scores your product and rewritten against its critique, up to two rounds. You see the best draft.
- Nothing is applied without you. A suggestion only fills the form. Your product changes when you press Save, or Apply all suggestions and confirm.
A language model can still phrase a true fact awkwardly, so read a suggestion as you would any copy. You can edit every word before saving.
How do you review and apply suggestions?
- Title: press Use this to put a suggestion in the title field, then edit freely.
- Description: a plain text editor with a word count, and the suggested description below it with Use this.
- Category fields: chips per attribute with the suggested value marked. Accept all fills them all; you can also pick other allowed values.
- Category: the suggested category appears under the category field, the way Shopify’s own picker shows it.
Apply all suggestions takes every suggestion on the page at once. It first shows exactly what will be written and asks you to confirm. Suggestions marked Scores the same would not move the score.
What is written to your store?
The title, description, category and category fields you picked are saved together, as one write that succeeds or fails as a whole. If any part cannot be written, the product is left exactly as it was and the message says why.
| Field | What is written |
|---|---|
| Title | The product title. |
| Description | The product description as paragraphs. The editor is plain text, so custom HTML formatting is lost when you replace a description. |
| Category | The product’s category in Shopify’s taxonomy. |
| Category fields | The values you picked, as the category metafields Shopify defines for that category. |
Nothing else on the product is touched: Octolift never writes SEO titles, meta descriptions, alt text, tags or images. After a save the product is analyzed again on its own, and the score updates when the new result lands.
How do history and undo work?
Every change you apply is recorded with the previous value, the suggestion it came from, and whether you applied it as suggested, edited it first or wrote your own. On the Products page, press Improvements on a product’s row to see them.
- Title and description changes undo with Undo (or Undo all), as long as the product still holds what Octolift wrote. If you have edited that field since, the undo is refused rather than overwriting your work.
- Category and category field changes can be undone when Octolift recorded what to go back to. When it could not, for example a category on a product that had none, the row says why and you change it in Shopify.
- History is kept for 30 days and then deleted.
Does improving cost anything?
No. A product counts against your plan the first time you analyze it, and everything after that is included: generating suggestions, regenerating them, applying and applying again. See Plans.
