How to Sell on ChatGPT and AI Assistants With Shopify
How to sell on ChatGPT with Shopify in 2026: check eligibility, fix product data, see if AI recommends you, and track the orders AI assistants send your store.
By Craftshift Team · · 8 min read
To sell on ChatGPT with Shopify you do not apply or install a ChatGPT app: eligible Shopify stores are already shared with ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta through the Shopify Catalog, at no extra fee. The work is making sure your store and products are eligible, complete enough for an assistant to recommend, and tracked once they sell. Here is how, step by step, as of October 2026.
The six steps at a glance
| Step | What to do | Where | How to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Check your store is eligible | Shopify admin > Sales channels > Agentic | No “Ineligible” warning; a catalog product count shows |
| 2 | Publish the required policies | Settings > Policies | Refund, privacy and terms of service filled in |
| 3 | Make every product catalog-eligible | Product pages | Each product has a category, image, price and URL |
| 4 | Fix the fields assistants compare | Product pages | Category fields, variants, images, description, reviews complete |
| 5 | Test the questions your shoppers ask | ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot | You see who gets recommended, per country |
| 6 | Track orders per assistant | Sales channels > Agentic, or an app | Orders credited to ChatGPT, Copilot, Google, Shop |
Can you sell Shopify products on ChatGPT?
Yes. Since March 24, 2026, Shopify says “millions of merchants can sell to ChatGPT users” through Agentic Storefronts (Shopify). OpenAI confirms: “If you sell through Shopify or Etsy, your catalog is already integrated, and no additional setup or application is required” (OpenAI).
Two conditions: your store must sell to US customers (it can be based anywhere), and shopping in ChatGPT is currently live for US users (Shopify Help Center).
Step 1: Is the ChatGPT channel already on for your store?
Probably. Agentic Storefronts is active by default for eligible stores, and the default setting “Allow Shopify to manage for me” switches on every AI channel and enrolls you in new ones (Shopify Help Center).
Check it in Sales channels > Agentic in your Shopify admin. An eligible store sees how many of its products are in the Shopify Catalog. An ineligible store sees a warning with the reason, such as a password-protected store or a B2B-only store. You need the Starter plan or higher.
Step 2: Publish the policies AI channels require
Shopify requires three policies before a store can sell through ChatGPT, Copilot, Google or Meta: terms of service, privacy policy, and return and refund policy, completed under Settings > Policies. A shipping policy is not required but counts toward Shopify’s policy completeness score, and assistants use policies to answer shopper questions about returns and delivery.
Octolift’s Settings page lists which of the required policies are still empty, with a link to the place in Shopify where you write them.
Step 3: Which products are eligible, and which get left out?
Each product needs a title, at least one image, a price above zero, a product URL, and a product category (Shopify Catalog requirements). Uncategorized products are excluded, which is the most common silent gap. So are unlisted products and several categories, including alcohol, tobacco, weapons, prescription products, adult content, services and event tickets.
Direct checkout inside Google, Copilot and Meta does not support subscriptions, bundles, customizable products or local pickup; those shoppers are sent to your online store instead.
Does selling on ChatGPT cost anything, and where does the shopper pay?
There is no extra fee: “There are no fees associated with selling in ChatGPT”, and the same holds for direct checkout in Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta, beyond standard payment processing.
Where the shopper pays depends on the assistant:
- ChatGPT: on your own Shopify checkout, opened inside ChatGPT’s in-app browser or a new tab. There is no in-chat checkout to turn on.
- Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Meta: direct checkout inside the assistant, powered by Shopify, on by default where eligible.
If you read that ChatGPT has an in-chat “Buy” button or charges a fee, that describes Instant Checkout, which launched in September 2025 and which OpenAI has since moved away from in favour of “merchant-owned checkout experiences” (OpenAI).
How does ChatGPT choose which products to recommend?
ChatGPT shows a product “when ChatGPT perceives it to be relevant to your intent”, using structured product data such as price and description, reviews and other third-party content. When several stores sell the same item, it ranks merchants on “availability, price, quality, and whether they are the maker or primary seller” (OpenAI Help). Product results are not ads.
Shopify scores the same kind of signals for its catalog: description completeness, image coverage, verified reviews, variant completeness with stock, and policy completeness (Shopify Help Center).
Step 4: Which product fields should you fix first?
Fix what an assistant compares, in this order:
| Field | Why an assistant needs it | Weak | Strong |
|---|---|---|---|
| Category and category fields | Filters like material, color, size come from here; no category means no catalog | Uncategorized, empty fields | Specific category, every field filled |
| Variant names | Matching “size 42 in navy” to a variant | Option 1, Style A, Default Title | Navy, 42, Left handed |
| Description | The facts an assistant quotes and compares | “Our best jacket, super warm!” | Material, fit, use, sizes, what is in the box |
| Title | What the product is, at a glance | JACKET SALE BEST | Merino crew sweater, navy |
| Images and alt text | Shopify scores image coverage | One image, no alt text | Three or more, each described |
| Reviews | Trust and ranking signal | Reviews only inside an app | Reviews that reach Shopify |
| Barcode (GTIN) | Matching your product across sources | Empty | Valid barcode |
Never add facts your product cannot back up to look more complete; assistants quote them to shoppers. Our checklist for AI written descriptions covers this. Octolift’s AI visibility score checks these fields per product, and Improve with AI drafts fixes from your own facts for you to approve.
Step 5: How do you check whether ChatGPT recommends your products?
Ask the questions your shoppers ask, in the countries you sell to, and record who gets recommended. Do it in ChatGPT and Gemini, and repeat it, because answers change between runs. Our guide to finding the questions shoppers ask AI shows how to build that list.
Octolift’s AI rankings automates it: each question runs as a live search of Shopify’s AI catalog for the chosen country, where your top 10 rank is repeatable, and is asked of ChatGPT and Gemini, with a verdict for each assistant and the competing brands recommended instead.
How do you sell on Gemini, Copilot and Meta too?
The same catalog feeds all of them, with a few differences (full comparison):
- Microsoft Copilot: automatic through the Shopify Catalog; Shopify merchants are auto-enrolled in Copilot Checkout for US buyers.
- Google AI Mode and Gemini: your products must be in Google Merchant Center through the Google & YouTube channel, and your store must be based in the US.
- Meta: through the Shopify Catalog, with direct checkout for US, Canadian and Mexican buyers.
Store answers matter too: assistants answer “how long does shipping take?” from your store’s own data. Octolift’s Knowledge base shows what they get back and drafts missing answers from your policies.
How long until changes show up in AI answers?
Shopify’s catalog continuously syncs price and inventory, so those update quickly in Shopify’s own data. How fast each assistant reflects new descriptions or reviews is not published, and OpenAI notes that price and shipping updates in ChatGPT may be delayed. Plan product changes weeks, not days, before a sale, and recheck your questions afterwards.
Step 6: How do you see the orders ChatGPT sends you?
In Sales channels > Agentic, pick a channel to see sales, orders, online store sessions and conversion. ChatGPT orders go through your own checkout and appear with ChatGPT referral attribution. Octolift’s Agentic sales page shows the same Shopify data over 7, 30 or 90 days, by assistant and by product.
Some AI visits arrive without a referrer and count as Direct, and Google Analytics and custom pixels do not fire in direct checkouts inside assistants, so read AI sales in Shopify rather than GA4 alone.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a ChatGPT app or merchant account to sell on ChatGPT?
No. Shopify stores are already integrated through the Shopify Catalog. OpenAI’s merchant waitlist is for businesses that are not on Shopify or Etsy.
Can I sell on ChatGPT if my store is outside the US?
Yes, if you sell to US customers. ChatGPT shopping is currently live for US users. Google AI Mode and Gemini additionally require a US-based store.
Can ChatGPT show the wrong price for my product?
It can, usually because a copy of your data is out of date or a variant has no price. Our guide on why an AI assistant shows the wrong price walks through the causes.
Can I stop my products appearing in ChatGPT?
Yes. In Sales channels > Agentic, turn off “Allow Shopify to manage for me” and switch off Shopify Catalog access for ChatGPT, or set specific products to Unlisted. Changes to catalog access can take up to 7 days.
Summary
